A First Step into Freedom: Our Turkey Poults Enjoy the Great Outdoors
Posted by Copas Farm Shop on 31st Jul 2025
We’re delighted to share a little update from the farm, our turkey poults have now been with us for a few weeks, and they’ve just taken their first steps into the great outdoors. It’s always a special moment when the barns open and the fields come alive with curious, lively little birds discovering the world beyond their pens.
When the poults first arrive, they spend their early days safe and cosy in warm barns, giving them time to grow strong and steady on their feet. Once they’re ready, we gradually remove the pens so they can roam indoors at their own pace before moving outside. Now, they’re enjoying the lush pastures and cherry orchards of our farm, free to forage, flap, and explore to their hearts’ content.
High welfare is at the very heart of everything we do. Allowing our turkeys to live naturally, with plenty of space, fresh air, and the freedom to behave as turkeys should, is essential to raising happy, healthy birds. Their oat‑rich diet is carefully balanced and completely free from antibiotics and growth promoters, and of course, it’s complemented by the grasses, seeds, and berries they forage for themselves in the fields.
This way of farming takes more time and care, but it’s worth every moment. The result is not only content, well‑cared‑for birds, but also turkeys of outstanding quality, with rich flavour and texture that simply can’t be achieved by industrial methods. Every year, we’re proud to continue a tradition that values welfare and quality above all else.
If you’re local to Cookham, we’d love for you to take a stroll along the public footpath that winds through the farm. It’s a real joy to see them thriving in their free‑range environment. Their playful chatter and fluttering wings are a sure sign that summer is in full swing here on the farm.
We’ll keep you updated as they grow, but for now, it’s wonderful to see the fields so full of life. Our turkeys are well on their way to becoming the high‑welfare, free‑range Copas birds that families have trusted and enjoyed for generations.
