Sunflowers Make Us All Smile

Many flowers open to the sun, but only one follows it constantly throughout the day. Watching the flowers turn in our field all day, every day, has been nothing short of inspiring. It has warmed our hearts and lifted our spirits. Something we all need as the weather changes and we head into a covid-restricted autumn and winter.
The sunflower, Helianthus annuus, is, of course, named after its extraordinary blooms that depict the sun and throw colour and joy to all that see, and a heady supply of pollen and seeds for local wildlife. Watching the sunflower reminds us to find the positive in life, to feel the warmth of the sun, and the generosity of others that have so much to share.
Our sunflower field has brought joy to so many over the past few weeks. An elderly lady in our community had not left her home since March until she visited the field this week, while others took a daily walk or a bike ride detour to soak up the joy.
This weekend our team joined hands with a sunflower pick. We planned to pick a few bunches and leave them in a wheelbarrow for folks to pick up. Instead we had queues of visitors and donations abound for the tirelessly and important work of Macmillan Cancer Support. Just like a sunflower that shares its warmth and keeps going every day, Macmillan Cancer Support helps thousands of cancer sufferers with whatever cancer throws their way.

The field is on the edge of our home village of Cookham (at the junction of Malders Lane and Cannon Court Road).
