At Copas Farm Shop, we’re proud to offer a traditional Christmas pudding made with care and the finest ingredients. But have you ever wondered how this festive favourite came to be? Let’s take a stroll through history and uncover the story behind this beloved dessert.
From Medieval Porridge to Sweet Delight
The Christmas pudding has its roots in the 14th century, starting life as a dish called frumenty. This was a hearty porridge made with wheat, dried fruits, spices, and sometimes meat. Over the centuries, the dish evolved: the meat gradually disappeared, the mixture became sweeter, and it transformed into the rich, fruity pudding we know and love today.
Victorian Traditions
By the 19th century, Christmas pudding had become a key part of British festive celebrations. During Queen Victoria’s reign, families adopted the tradition of making the pudding on “Stir-up Sunday,” the last Sunday before Advent. Each family member would take a turn stirring the mixture from east to west, in honour of the Three Wise Men, and make a secret wish for the year ahead.
A Royal Recipe
Christmas pudding even has royal connections. In 1927, the British Empire Marketing Board published a recipe for a Royal Christmas Pudding, featuring ingredients from across the Empire, such as currants from Australia, raisins from South Africa, and rum from Jamaica. This global blend shows just how far-reaching the love for Christmas pudding has been.
