How to Make the Ultimate Spaghetti and Meatballs with Copas Farm Shop Beef Mince
Posted by Copas Farm Shop on 8th Sep 2025
As the colder weather makes its way in, warm, comforting food becomes irresistible. Few dishes are as satisfying as a plate of spaghetti and meatballs and tends to be very popular with the whole family. The rich tomato sauce, perfectly seasoned meatballs, and pasta cooked just tender create a classic combination that feels like home.
When making homemade spaghetti and meatballs, do you prefer them herby and flavourful, or simple and classic? If you love extra flavour, try adding fresh herbs like parsley, oregano, or a little basil to the meatballs, it gives them a fragrant, savoury kick. For a simpler, classic taste, just season with salt, pepper, and a touch of Parmesan, sometimes less really is more. I've added below my favourite recipe but make it your own by playing around with the ingredients you and your family love.
Why Copas Farm Shop Beef Mince Makes a Difference
At Copas Farm Shop, our beef comes from heritage breeds like Galloways and Short Horns, pasture-reared and dry-aged for at least 28 days. This care ensures a depth of flavour and tenderness that can't be beaten when it comes to home cooking. Using Copas Farm Shop beef mince gives your meatballs a rich, full-bodied taste that works perfectly with a hearty tomato sauce.
Ingredients for the Meatballs (Serves 4)
-
1 medium onion, finely chopped
-
2 cloves garlic, minced
-
1 egg, lightly beaten
-
50g fresh breadcrumbs
-
2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley
-
50g grated Parmesan cheese
-
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
-
Olive oil for frying
Ingredients for the Tomato Sauce
-
2 tablespoons olive oil
-
1 onion, finely chopped
-
2 cloves garlic, minced
-
400g tin of chopped tomatoes
-
2 tablespoons tomato purée
-
1 teaspoon dried oregano
-
1 teaspoon dried basil
-
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
-
A pinch of sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
Making the Perfect Spaghetti and Meatballs
-
Mix the Meatball Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the beef mince, onion, garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, parsley, Parmesan, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined – overworking can make the meatballs tough.
-
Shape the Meatballs: Roll the mixture into golf-ball-sized meatballs for even cooking.
-
Brown the Meatballs: Heat olive oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, turning occasionally until golden brown. They will finish cooking in the sauce.
Preparing the Tomato Sauce
-
Sauté the Aromatics: Heat olive oil over medium heat. Cook onion and garlic until soft and fragrant.
-
Add the Tomatoes: Stir in the chopped tomatoes and tomato purée. Season with oregano, basil, salt, pepper, and a pinch of sugar if required. Simmer for 10 minutes.
-
Combine Meatballs and Sauce: Add the browned meatballs to the sauce. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes, allowing the meatballs to soak up the rich flavours.
Bringing It All Together
Cook your spaghetti according to the cooking instructions on the packet. Drain and toss with a little olive oil. Serve your spaghetti and meatballs topped with the sauce, then sprinkle with parsley and extra Parmesan.
